Marietta spent every school and summer vacation decorating plates under the
instruction of her father.  He would throw plates and various forms for her to practice
"writing", a term used to describe decorating, the goal being that one would paint as
naturally and as fast as writing.
The term was used since Ancient Times as can be seen inscribed by the master
"potter-writer" Euphronios on the 5th Century BC krater form shown below,
from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
